Thank you to everyone who came out to the first PTA meeting of the year last Tuesday! Our PTA’s strength is definitely in its many caring and capable members. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 21st. Please come if your schedule permits as we will be voting on expenditures to build a Gaga pit for use by both primary and intermediate students and on teacher wish list items. An update from the Jaguar Jog will also be presented.

Tax Accountant Needed
April 15 may be months away, but the Whittier PTA’s taxes are due by November 1. To that end, the PTA is looking for a CPA or otherwise qualified tax accountant who would be willing to volunteer to help complete these taxes (preferably pro bono). Jaguar Jog – THIS SUNDAY, September 28!!
Jaguar Jog 2014 is THIS SUNDAY, September 28th! This email contains lots of important last minute info, so please read closely!!!!
RACE PACKET PICK-UP on Friday, September 26 from 2:00-4:00pm in the Jaguar Jungle at Whittier. If you’re running in the race or if you ordered a t-shirt, come to Whittier on Friday afternoon to pick up your race packet. Participants will receive a goodie bag, t-shirt and race bib.
- New this year is electronic timing – You WILL NEED a race bib to run so please pick up your packets! If you can’t be there on Friday, please email whittierjaguarjog@gmail.com to let us know if your child or someone else can pick up your race packet for you. Or you can pick up your items at 8am on Sunday morning before the race.
- Raffle tickets – In case you haven’t gotten your raffle tickets yet, they will be on sale at packet pickup. Or go to https://whittierschoolpta.org/jjtix/ and buy some today!
- Pom-poms will also be on sale for $2 so you can show your school spirit around the course!
RACE DAY REMINDERS – New this year is electronic timing! Your bib (not someone else’s bib!!!) MUST be pinned onto the FRONT of your shirt to guarantee a result!
****If your child is running the 1-Mile and the 5K, they must wear a separate bib for each event!
****Please remind your kids the 5k is 3 laps of the course!!!!!!
****Please leave your pets at home on race day! No dogs will be allowed at the event!

It’s time for WRECK!
What is WRECK? It is Whittier Robotics and Engineering Club for Kids, a unique free class sponsored by the PTA. Each week we build a Lego model using a motor, gears, and sensors, then we program it with Lego WEDO software to bring the model to life. WRECK is open to 3rd and 4th grade students and will be on Tuesday evenings, from 6:30-7:30 in the Whittier computer lab (next to the LRC). Class starts 10/7 and runs 6 weeks through 11/18 (skipping 11/11).

Masterpiece of the Month
We are still in need of volunteers for Masterpiece of the Month! Please consider joining us for this wonderful program and help share Art with our kids. We still need volunteers for Swade, Jurinek, Pawlowski and Edwards. Please contact Kristi Maher at kmaher@ftportfolios.com.
Whittier Elementary School and Chess Scholars present Chess Club with Professional Instruction!
Develop your child’s interest and intellect through the royal game of Chess! Current research has shown a strong link between chess and academic performance in a variety of areas, including mathematics and language arts. Chess has been proven to enhance motivation, concentration, focus, social skills and creativity.
The Fall Session will include 8 classes beginning on Monday, October 20th and ending on Monday, December 15th, no class on November 10th (Teacher Institute Day). All students K-6th grade can participate. Please see Fall 2014 Chess Scholars Flyer Whittier school for registration and fees.
