The Whittier PTA is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) organization. Our non-profit status allows us to fundraise and receive tax exemptions in order to fulfill our mission. All funds raised directly support the events, programs and services we organize for teachers, students and families. There are 2 large fundraisers per year (fall and spring) with Experiences connected to each of these events.
Why only 2 fundraisers? In order to maintain its non-profit 501(c)3 status, the Whittier PTA must balance its events/offerings with fundraising efforts. If the focus becomes revenue (functioning more like a for-profit) – we are no longer serving our mission and could jeopardize our non-profit standing. More information is available on the IL PTA website: “Appropriate Use of PTA Funds”.
What makes a successful event? Our fundraising events are meant to be community building through fundraising. Attendance/participation of Whittier’s students, teachers, parents/guardians and families weighs equally as important as the funds raised.
Wondering what Experiences entail? Experiences are a fun way to build community among students, teachers and families while also fundraising for the PTA. Typically twice a year, during our spring and fall fundraisers, families/staff are invited to host and/or sign up for Experiences. The host(s) cover the cost of the event, then all registration fees for the event go to the PTA.
Past experiences have included student focused events (movie night, bingo, kickball, etc.), while other experiences have been geared towards families or adult only events (yoga, volleyball, trivia, etc.). The events have taken place at school, homes/backyards, restaurant/bars, theaters/studios, trains, sports venues… there are many options to get creative and have FUN!

Here are Fall 2023 Experiences, as an Example:
The Spring Fundraiser is typically an adult (parent/guardian/staff) event. See below for more information for the 2024 fundraiser.
Our Fall Fundraiser is typically a family event – in most recent years it has been a Fun Run. Thanks to all who planned, volunteered and participated in the 2023 Haunted Hustle!
